World-First U.S. Antimicrobial Formulation Proven to Provide Ongoing Protection for Surfaces From the Coronavirus That Causes COVID-19
There was some exciting news last week with an announcement by the Global Virus Network (GVN) that will make Australian organisations safer for employees, customers, and members of the public.
The GVN is a coalition comprised of the world’s preeminent human and animal virologists from 53 Centers of Excellence and 10 Affiliates in 32 countries.
The network announced that two of its Centers of Excellence, the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (based in the University of Melbourne) and the Rega Medical Research Institute of KU Leuven (in Belgium) demonstrated that an antimicrobial formulation made in the U.S. eradicates SARS-CoV-2 (the unique coronavirus that causes COVID-19) on surfaces and provides continuous residual virucidal activity for more than six weeks.
BIOPROTECT™ is an antimicrobial disinfectant made by ViaClean Technologies in Philadelphia. It forms the centrepiece of Ozland’s response to the growing need for Australian organizations to act more aggressively to ease the health and safety fears of employees, customers, and members of the public.
Ozland has secured exclusive rights to using BIOPROTECT™ in Australia so this comes as timely news.
The antimicrobial agent was already approved by the FDA and included on the EPA-N List. It has provided durable antimicrobial protection in organisations across America where stringent cleaning protocols are required, such as in hospitals, the New York Transit Authority and the US Army and Marine Corp.
BIOPROTECT™ was already known to eliminate and inhibit the growth of bacteria, some viruses, fungi, algae, and other microbes that can exist on many surfaces.
The latest announcement that it eradicates SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces and provides continuous protection for more than six weeks comes as Australia and the rest of the world is in need of new measures to raise confidence in people returning to work.
Prof. Damian Purcell, Head of the Molecular Virology Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity said:
“Our studies on numerous antiseptic agents for surfaces contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 show that the BIOPROTECT™ formulation’s long-lasting activity is far superior to conventional decontamination agents in general use.”
The president of the Global Virus Network, Dr. Bréchot, said:
“The results of the tests clearly demonstrate that BIOPROTECT™ eradicates SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces and provides continuous residual antimicrobial protection for an extended period of time.”
“…we are not aware of any microbicide surface treatment that continuously prohibits the growth and surface transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 for an extended period of time. This represents a significant breakthrough in inhibiting the spread of COVID-19 by preventing surfaces from being contaminated by the virus and stopping the spread of the virus through contact with contaminated surfaces.”
Effective antimicrobials will be at the forefront of ensuring that our workplaces and public spaces remain safe and healthy now and in the future.
Ozland is proud to bring this technology to Australia at a time when we all need some positive news.
